Celebratory March On Red Square

1,200 people have taken part today in a celebratory march in the Russian capital to mark the 60th anniversary of the battle of Moscow - World War II's crucial moment, Interfax news agency reported, citing Moscow authorities. 137 veterans who have marched today through Moscow's Red Square took part in the historic parade of November 7, 1941.

A platoon of young drummers of the Moscow military musical college and other representatives of city military schools marched across the square shoulder to shoulder with old veterans.

The Soviet Union lost more than 20 million people in the war against German's Nazi, far more than any other country involved in WWII.

There was another different march today in Moscow. The left opposition was marking a regular anniversary of the October revolution with rallies and meetings. Supporters of the KPRF, Agrarian Party, Labour Russia and other ultra-communist movements passed through the center of Moscow to Theater Square where they held a meeting. According to Moscow police, some 10,000 people gathered for the meeting.

The march went off mainly calmly and without serious incidents. However Moscow policemen were put on high alert in the capital.
